Buckwheat Pillows

Buckwheat hull pillows contour your neck with firm support, soothe muscle tensions, offer relief from shoulder/neck tightness, and prevent headaches. The Hermell Buckwheat Bolster Pillow provides you with the head and neck support you need to drift quickly off to sleep. Its crescent shape is stuffed with a buckwheat hull fill that shifts to perfectly conform to your body like memory-foam, but with a natural, hypoallergenic design. The pillow has a polyester and cotton blend cover and a 100 percent premium buckwheat fill. At 29" x 19", it will easily fit any standard-size pillowcase for easy use. Hand wash as needed; the pillow is not designed to withstand machine washing or drying.

Nothing beats a good night's sleep, so it's important to find the pillow that will support and pamper your neck in just the right ways. Most pillows are filled with feathers, fiberfill, or foam. In Japan, however, people sleep on buckwheat pillows. The small buckwheat hulls shift inside the case to match the exact contour of your neck and head.

The even support means no more cramps or muscle tension - both of which are known to contribute to headaches. Natural buckwheat filling is ideal for people allergic to feathers and synthetic materials. Since they're small and easy to carry, these malleable pillows are also a great present for friends who travel a lot - a handmade buckwheat pillow will make anyone on an overnight flight feel more comfortable. An 18-pound bag of buckwheat hulls will make about six 14 1/2-by-21-inch pillows. Tools and Materials Soft fabric, such as oxford cloth, preshrunk Scissors Straight pins 6-foot length of 1/4-inch contrasting piping Needle Thread Sewing machine Iron Ironing board Buckwheat hulls Buckwheat Pillows How-To 1. Measure and cut two 14 1/2-by-21-inch rectangles of fabric.

Pin piping, finished edge facing in, 1/4 inch from the raw edge of one of the rectangles, all the way around its perimeter. Then sew in place, as close to the cord as possible. To join the two ends of the piping together, remove about an inch of the stitches that secure the piping's fabric covering. Push back the covering to reveal the cord. Trim the cord so that it just touches the cord on the other end of the piping without overlapping. Roll the covering back over the cord, and let it overlap slightly with the other end of piping. Hand-stitch to secure.

Pin the second rectangle to the piped rectangle, right sides together. Sew the pieces together, stitching directly over the piping stitches of the first rectangle.

Leave a 5-inch opening on one of the narrower sides. Turn right side out, and press. Fill the pillow generously with buckwheat hulls, leaving just enough space for the hulls to move so the pillow is malleable. Turn under the opening's seam allowance, pin open edges together, and whip-stitch the pillow closed.

WHAT ARE ROASTED HULLS & WHAT DOES IT MEAN? “Roasted Hulls” or “Heat Treating Hulls” They are both describing the same process, but roasting doesn’t sound so clinical; so it makes a much better story line when you’re attempting to turn a negative into a positive. There is only one reason for roasting hulls, and that is to make cheap imported buckwheat hulls from a foreign country eligible for sale in the USA. (read this twice) Important. there are NO ROASTED hulls that are certified organic!

There is no substitute for high quality buckwheat grown on certified organic food farms in the USA, none. There is no substitute for properly and thoroughly cleaned hulls. Caution. There are websites out there portraying themselves as experts, geeks, and gurus; nothing could be further from the truth. Those sites are designed to funnel you through their maze of Google™ Advertisements where they get paid when you click on any of those links. Their “information” is a stream of revenue for them.

Buckwheat hull pillows are commonly prescribed for the relief of neck pain, back pain, headaches, muscle tension, snoring, TMJ syndrome, neck and back, sleeplessness, and other conditions. WHY BUCKWHEAT HULL FILLING?

The natural filling has many advantages over conventional fiberfill, foam, or feather fillings. The most important quality for the relief of pain is that the material conforms to the exact contours of the head and neck providing support. This means that you have the same amount of support in all areas minimizing the stress on all areas of support. Other filling materials which compress, try to recover their original shape and this puts stress on the muscles of the neck. Other advantages of the buckwheat hull filling are the 'cool in the summer, warm in the winter' insulating properties, the ability to adjust the size to your individual needs by removing or adding back filler so the pillow fits you just right. The filling also lasts for many years making the pillow the best value cervical pillow on the market. Long after other pillows have collapsed and worn out a buckwheat hull pillow will still be fully functional.

Original Buckwheat Pillow ® are also environmentally friendly - for each pillow put to use it will save the manufacturing of the synthetic filling for ten or more ordinary pillows. HOW LONG DO THE PILLOWS LAST? DO THE HULLS WEAR OUT OR CRUMBLE? Original Buckwheat Pillow ® should last for about 10 - 15 years. The hulls do not break down or wear out, but they do become polished with use. As the natural texture of the hulls become polished the pillows actually work better than new because the hulls move and conform to your contours easily. If you ever do need additional hulls, they are available for a nominal charge.

WHAT ARE BUCKWHEAT HULLS? Buckwheat hulls are the husks that protect the buckwheat kernel from the various elements of nature. It is not a wheat at all, but actually a fruit (fagopyrum esculentum) related to rhubarb. The buckwheat used in our pillows is organically grown in the United States, using no fertilizers or pesticides. We use an exclusive hull cleaning process that uses triple cleaning method to remove any buckwheat flour residue from the hulls. I'VE HEARD ABOUT HEATING OR COOLING BUCKWHEAT PILLOWS, IS THAT HELPFUL?

Refrigerating or freezing buckwheat pillows is certainly alright. Cold therapy can sometimes be useful for the reduction of swelling and can relieve pain. Heating the pillows is possible but we do not recommend it because it can reduce the moisture content of the hulls and is potentially unsafe. We suggest extreme caution if you ever plan on heating any natural grain pillow. I'M ALLERGIC TO WHEAT AND GRAIN, CAN I USE BUCKWHEAT HULL PILLOWS? Buckwheat hulls are not a grain like wheat, they are a fruit. Hulls are Hypo-allergenic and very few people are allergic to buckwheat hull pillows.

In actual usage it seems that about one in six thousand people can not use the pillows because of their allergies. This may be actually related to the tiny amount buckwheat flour residue. According to studies about 1 to 5% of the population may be allergic to the proteins in buckwheat flour, however our exclusive double-cleaning process removes virtually all of the buckwheat flour from the hulls. If you notice any allergic reaction such as itchy throat, watery eyes, runny nose, etc.

Discontinue use of the pillow. Please report any reactions to us and return the pillow for a refund. Buckwheat flour residue in uncleaned hulls as used in some copies of our pillows may have a higher risk of allergic reaction. CAN CHILDREN USE THE PILLOW? Newborns, and infants under 4 months old must never use ANY pillows or soft bedding materials such as comforters, sheepskin bed warmers etc.

Due to increased risk of SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome) according to the CPSC (Consumer Products Safety Commission). Although you can breathe straight through buckwheat hull filled pillows, the Carbon Dioxide concentration can increase causing risk to infants. We also do not recommend young children under about 11 years old use buckwheat hull pillows, at least without careful adult instruction on the proper use, making the hollow area for the head and keeping the pillow close to the shoulders. CAN I USE THESE PILLOWS ON A WATERBED? Buckwheat hull pillows work great on waterbeds. They provide a similar type of shaping to your body that the waterbed does. The light airy hulls keep your head from overheating from the heated waterbed.

DO THE PILLOWS EVER GET BUGS/MITES/FUNGUS? The hulls are what provide the natural protection to the buckwheat kernel from natures invading organisms, and since they are a fiber they are not nutritive. It is unheard of for any of our pillows in regular use to ever get any infestation. Any natural pillows kept in storage for long periods of time that are not in use may provide a habitat for any number of organisms, therefore if you are going to store a pillow for long periods of time it is recommended to keep the pillow in a freezer at least for one day per month as a preventive measure, especially if you live in a hot and humid environment. Alternatively, you may use a vacuum pack sealing system. This is preferable to adding chemical agents to the pillow.

We believe that people should not be exposed to chemicals when they are sleeping. Most synthetic fiber, foam and feather pillows have formaldehyde, UV inhibitors, anti-fungal agents, stabilizers, plasticizer, etc. There are no chemical additives used in the growing of hulls for our pillows, and the only cleaning agent used is air. HOW CAN I CLEAN THE PILLOWS? The pillow cases can be machine washed and tumble dried. Iron if desired.

We do not recommend cleaning the hulls. The inner liner will rarely need cleaning, but when it does simply remove the hulls from the zippered opening and wash the liner in warm water and tumble dry. Replace the hulls when the liner is completely dry. HOW DO I USE THE PILLOW? The first few nights you might take a little getting used to the pillow because it feels different than other pillows you may be used to.

The pillow will conform to your contours as you move around during the night. The pillow is also good for people who never use any pillows because most pillows provide too much support lifting your head too far off the bed, but the Original Buckwheat Pillow ® let your head rest close to the bed. WHAT IS THE FABRIC MADE OF? All models have a zippered inner liner made of cotton twill, a soft and dense fabric of the highest quality. HOW DO THE ORIGINAL BUCKWHEAT PILLOWS ® HELP NECK PAIN, AND MUSCLE TENSION?

When sleeping on an Original Buckwheat Pillow ®, all the muscles and tendons are relaxed and in their preferred position of proper cervical curve (normal cervical lordosis). The support of buckwheat hulls support the entire head and neck area uniformly. With fiberfill and foam pillows (even those designed to be 'cervical' pillows) there are always areas of the pillow that are more compressed than other areas, which forces your muscles to fight back against the pressures.

When you relax the shoulder and neck muscles during sleep it lets the nerves relax and heal from the daily irritation of head, back and arm movements. HOW DO THE ORIGINAL BUCKWHEAT PILLOWS ® HELP HEADACHES? The buckwheat hull pillow, tends to lower blood pressure, which is a major cause of stress related headaches. HOW DO THE ORIGINAL BUCKWHEAT PILLOWS ® HELP SNORING? The Original Buckwheat Pillow ® seems to work to reduce or eliminate snoring in about half of users. The people who are not helped may have more serious problems such as sleep apnea and are strongly urged to see a qualified health professional as soon as possible. HOW IS THE PILLOW HELPFUL FOR LOW BACK PAIN?

When your neck is in normal cervical position, your spinal cord is relaxed (shortened), thereby putting less stress on the lower back nerve roots. This is often a source of pain where there is any type of disk problem. You can also achieve additional relaxation of the spinal cord when you place a pillow behind your knees. The pillow can also help mid-back pain, but is much more sucessful at with the upper and lower spine. HOW DO THE ORIGINAL BUCKWHEAT PILLOWS ® HELP TMJ (Temporal Mandibular Joint) PROBLEMS? The more relaxed the neck and shoulder muscles, the easier it is for the smaller jaw and facial muscles to function properly. HOW DO THE ORIGINAL BUCKWHEAT PILLOWS ® HELP SLEEPLESSNESS?

When you lie on an Original Buckwheat Pillow ® and let your muscles relax, you tend to fall asleep faster. Many people say that they wake up in the same position they fell asleep in and apparently didn't moved all night.

You may even find that you wake up more refreshed and alert. There is some speculation, however not tested or confirmed, that resting your head on natural buckwheat hull pillow will induce more lucid dreaming while using the pillow.
